Physical Education All-Level Certification with Coaching Minor, B.S.

Mission

The mission of the Texas Wesleyan University All-Level Physical Education Teacher Education program is to develop outstanding teacher professionals who are knowledgeable as exercise specialists and wellness educators and who possess the specialized knowledge and abilities to deliver a quality physical education and wellness curriculum. Our goal is to produce educators who:

  • Apply the principles of instruction and assessment in the delivery of curriculum;
  • Are committed to continue professional growth and development;
  • Are skilled in the use of instructional technology to promote learning;
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, administrators, and other professionals in a range of formats;
  • Possess knowledge to deliver age appropriate content;
  • Uphold the ethics of the teaching profession;
  • Use effective and diverse teaching practices to meet the needs of all learners; and
  • Value and encourage critical thinking and problem solving.

In addition to Texas Teacher Certification, students who complete the coaching minor will satisfy the UIL Texas Education Code and Coaching Education Requirement and will be nationally certified through the American Sport Education Program (ASEP).

Principles of Coaching Certification

This course is certified through the American Sport Education Program through Human Kinetics Coaching Education Center, 1607 N. Market Street, P.O. Box 5076, Champaign, IL 61825-5076; 1-800-747-5698, ext. 2980.

Requirements for Admission to Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Program: 

Students who plan to complete teacher certification requirements must be admitted to the PETE Program. Students can apply after successful completion of EXS 1300  

Admission to the PETE Program is required before students are allowed to begin additional course work in the Physical Education Teacher Education program. Student’s application for admission to the PETE Program is complete when the requirements listed below are satisfied.

Note: All requirements must be met before students are permitted to enroll in Physical Education Teacher Education courses.

Students must:

  • Complete PETE program application and be accepted
  • Have a combined GPA of 2.50 or higher
  • Complete EXS 1300   with minimum grade of “C”
  • Complete at least 15 semester hours, and
  • Pass background check

Requirements for Continuance in the PETE Program:

In order to progress through the PETE program the student must meet all criteria set by the School of Education and the following:

  • Maintain a combined (Texas Wesleyan University) GPA or 2.50 or higher
  • Maintain a clean background check
  • Complete all EXS and EDU courses with a minimum grade of “C”
  • Complete the TExES PPR and EC-12 PE Certification Exam

You may potentially be ineligible for Texas Teacher Certification if you have been convicted of a criminal offense.  The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will take into consideration the nature and seriousness of the crime. Under Texas Occupations Code 53.102, you have the right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from the TEA. General Education Curriculum Course Requirements


General Education Curriculum (36 Hours)


The General Education Core (GEC) is divided into two categories: Foundational Courses (18 Hours) and Pillar Courses (18 Hours minimum).

  • A student must complete a minimum of 36 hours between foundational courses and pillar courses.

  • Students must complete at least one course from each of the following areas: humanities/fine arts, social/behavioral sciences, and natural science/mathematics.

  • Foundational courses are meant to be 1000-level courses that provide the student with college-level skills in communication, wellness, and analytical and quantitative reasoning.

  • Pillar courses are meant to provide a student with flexibility to explore different interests prior to the beginning the major program.

Foundational Courses (18 Hours)


English Composition (6 Hours)

Wellness (3 Hours)

Mathematics (3 Hours)

Choose one (1) of the following courses:

Note:

  • MAT 1304  is acceptable for all programs in the School of Arts and Sciences except for the programs in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics. 
  • MAT 1304   is acceptable for all programs in the School of Education.
  • MAT 1304   is not acceptable for any program in the School of Business and Professional Programs.

Pillar Courses (18 Hours)


In addition to the Foundational Courses, the student completes at least two courses in each pillar.

  • A student must complete a minimum of 36 hours between foundational courses and pillar courses.

  • Students must complete at least one course from each of the following areas: humanities/fine arts, social/behavioral sciences, and natural science/mathematics across the GEC.

  • Since each course applies to two pillars, it is possible for the student to begin to focus on aquiring skills and content that prepare them for their major. It will also be possible for a student to use the remaining GEC courses to explore areas of interest that lie outside their major pathway. This provides the student with opportunities to consider a minor or second major.

Pillar One: Communication and Interpersonal Skills


In addition to the 18 hours required for the Foundation courses, students must complete additional courses within the Pillars requirements.

These courses should be chosen outside of those that have already been taken to fulfill the Foundation requirement.

Pillar Two: Technology and Problem Solving


In addition to the 18 hours required for the Foundation courses, students must complete additional courses within the Pillars requirements. 

These courses should be chosen outside of those that have already been taken to fulfill the Foundation requirement.

Pillar Four: Democratic Citizenship and Wellness in a Diverse Society


In addition to the 18 hours required for the Foundation courses, students must complete additional courses within the Pillars requirements. 

These courses should be chosen outside of those that have already been taken to fulfill the Foundation requirement.

Physical Education All-Level Certification with Coaching Minor, B.S. (120 Hours)

To enter the education certification program for All Level Physical Education, a student must attain a 2.75 cumulative GPA. A Texas Wesleyan student with the required GPA will be allowed to begin education courses in the fall of her/his sophomore year; transfer students who have completed 45 hours with the required GPA will be allowed to begin education classes during her/his first semester at Texas Wesleyan. Students must maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA to remain in the All Level Physical Education program.
