COU 6332 - Crisis Intervention Counseling 3 Credits
This course introduces students to the foundational knowledge needed to understand the impact of crises, disasters, and other traumatic events on individuals. It covers essential principles of crisis intervention, exploring how to effectively support people experiencing various types of trauma. Students examine the appropriate use of diagnostic tools during crises, learning to differentiate between formal diagnoses and developmentally appropriate reactions to such events. Additionally, the course provides specific crisis intervention practices, including assessing and managing suicide risk, utilizing suicide prevention models, and applying psychological first aid strategies. Through this training, students develop critical skills to respond compassionately and competently in crisis situations.
Prerequisite(s): Student must take 12 hours of Counseling courses.
