COU 6310 - Advanced Psychopathology


3 Credits

This course offers a comprehensive study of psychopathology, anchored in the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM framework. Students examine the major psychological disorders, exploring their scientific bases, contemporary theories, and the societal impacts of mental illness. Covering the lifespan, the course prepares students to assess, diagnose, and counsel clients competently, emphasizing concepts like etiology, differential diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment plans. With an integrative approach, the course considers biological, psychological, social, cultural, familial, and political factors that influence abnormal behavior, including issues specific to children and adolescents. Students learn about the historical development of psychopathology, major theoretical frameworks, DSM diagnostic categories, and psycho-pharmacological treatments. Additionally, they delve into ethical, legal, andcultural considerations, understanding how these influence mental health professionals’ responsibilities and societal perceptions of mental disorders.
